Lightweight Blocks
Zeolites are used in various ways in the construction industry and in the production of construction materials. In fact, more than 60% of the world's zeolite production is consumed by the construction industry in China to make high performance and lightweight concrete.
Zeolites are porous aluminosilicates and therefore natural pozzolans. They can be used to replace up to 40% of the cement in Portland cement concrete to make lightweight concrete with specific properties. Concrete can be made with a compressive strength ranging from 5 to 30 MPa, and density ranging from 500 to 1500 kg/m3.
The porous structure of natural zeolite holds water which can increase curing time and increase strength during curing. Zeolites also have much higher cation exchange capacities than other natural pozzolans and this limits, or totally prevents the alkali-silica reaction.
Cement clinker manufacture requires a lot of energy and produces massive amounts of carbon dioxide, which means the use of zeolite in concrete leads to significant energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions.
The use of 10 tonnes of zeolite saves approximately one tonne of fuel.
Zeolite can be expanded by heating to around 1200ºC to produce lightweight aggregate with a density of around 0.8 kg/cm3. This can be used to make lightweight blocks for construction, or decorative wall panels for example.
Natural zeolite can also be used to make ceramics, glazes and frits. The full potential of zeolites in the ceramics industry has yet to be realized, and scientists are only now beginning to investigate it's true potential.
The construction industry is moving forward and there is an increasing demand for hi-tech, energy efficient building materials. Natural zeolite is an important raw material which offers many opportunities to develope new materials for the future.
